Slim and The Supreme Angels - Have You Heard The News

Slim & The Supreme Angels

Have You Heard The News

With the recent passing of Rev. Howard “Slim” Hunt, we decided to review the last video made by his group – Slim and The Supreme Angels.  The last video featuring only the group is titled Have You Heard The News.

Slim was indeed a giant in the gospel music industry.  This towering individual could never impress anyone with his weight; after all he was Slim.  He was, however, a force in the gospel music industry that could not be ignored.  This gentle person was unique.  He had a style (musically) that was one of a kind.  He did not try to sound like someone else and no one could sound like Slim.  And, the video Have You Heard The News embodies all of these characteristics and more.

This power packed video was recorded at Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.  The ambience of Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church makes for the perfect setting for this recording.  The stage is certainly large enough for the singers and the musicians.  There is no one hinging around the stage.  Therefore, you are able to focus on the singers and not be distracted by any unnecessary activity on the stage.

There are 11 clips on this video, which, by the way, bares the same title as the CD, Have You Heard The News.  We reviewed the CD in March 2004.  Therefore, for an assessment of the songs check out the CD review at our Quartet CD Reviews’ page.

The group is at their best on this video.  The energy displayed by the group will make it difficult for any viewer to stay seated.  The video opens with guys already on stage moving right into “Old Time Religion.”  They move from song to song with the level of professionalism you would expect from
The Supreme Angels. In addition, to actually see Sugar and Mike and Maurice being showcase as lead singers on video adds another dimension to the video and even deeper appreciation for Slim and the guys.  It seems that Slim was preparing the guys for the day they will not have him as their leader.  The guys really step up to the plate and delivered.

There are many close-ups of the members of the group and musicians.  Because the lighting was just right, there are also great shots of the audience.  Speaking of the audience, they were really into this song service.  The crowd response is great.

The quality of the sound is outstanding.  There are no highs or lows in the sound quality.  The recording level is consistent throughout the video.

The project is vintage
Supreme Angels.  If you are looking for a good video that embodies all that Slim represented, then you will want to add this video to your collection.

Overall this is a great video.  Unfortunately, you will not find any interviews on this video. It would have been great to have some of the history of the group on this video.  For the gospel music history buff, a brief interview with all of the group members would have been a plus.  One can only imagine the many ‘golden nuggets’ that would have been revealed with the interviews.

The project is vintage traditional gospel quartet.  You may want to add this video to your collection before in becomes a collector's item and hard to find.  We give the video Slim and The Supreme Angels' "Have You Heard The News" a 10 out of 10.  Click on the picture above to view a clip from the video.***  To order your copy of the DVD click HERE.
