Darrell McFadden & The Disciples

I've Got A Right

Ever since it was announced that Darrell McFadden and The Disciples had moved to the EMI Gospel label, quartet fans have anxiously awaited the release of their new project.  The project was released on January 10, 2006, and has rapidly become a favorite, not only among gospel quartet music fans, but of the general music buying public.

Therefore, this month we review Darrell McFadden and The Disciples “I’ve Got A Right.”  Just looking at the liner notes will let you know that you are in for one of the best recording from the Bishop and the guys.  The current line-up for this recording included the Bishop, Gene Peoples, Spanky Williams, Antrun Sherrills, Anthony Sherrills, Justin McKoy, Robbie Baldwin, Darnell Taylor, Jeffrey Newberry, Jr., Terance Key and William Peoples.  From this list, you will notice that some of the best vocalist, writers, and musician in the industry today took part in this recording.  In fact the producers have a track record of bringing to the industry some of the best recordings in gospel music.  The producers are Gene Peoples and Spanky Williams.

The Bishop begins the project with “Be Ready.”  Spanky is listed as singing background on this track.  However, you will readily notice that Spanky’s vocal is definitely prominent on this song.  Certain chords in this song will take you back to some of the group’s earlier recording.

Spanky sings lead on the ballad “Calling Me.”  This is one of those songs that carry with it a very powerful message.  Unfortunately, unless you buy the CD, you may never hear this song.  Because it is not upbeat or a drive song, it will probably not receive any airplay.  Rest assured, once you listen to it, you will find yourself playing it over and over.

Spanky and the Bishop share lead duties on “Than You.”  This is followed by the very upbeat “I Believe.”  If this song does not get you clapping your hands and tapping your feet, call the doctor.  This is a great song.  The Bishop sings lead on this song.  Listen closely and you will hear the best of Darrell McFadden’s vocal abilities.  The way he handles the high and low pitches is just superb.  The background harmony is tight on all of the song, however, on this song, it is exceptional.

The title track, “I’ve Got A Right” is next.  The Bishop also does the lead duties on this song.  The song takes you through several reasons why you do have a RIGHT to serve the Lord.  It is almost a mini sermon in song.  Expect this one to get plenty of airplay.

Get ready for a shouting old fashion revival with “Hold On.”  They guys really, as The Late Willie Neal Johnson would say, “go to work” on this song.  What a great drive song.

Cheryl “Coco” Gamble joins the Bishop and Spanky in sharing lead duties on “Who’ll Be A Witness.”   Although this song borders on being contemporary, it deserves your attention.  Admittedly, this one will have to grow on you.  But, the interaction between the lead singers is, alone, worth really listening to the words to this song.

Spanky is a great singer.  He is at his best when signing a ballads.  So, you should really enjoy “Spirit Now.”  This song will reveal to you why Spanky is in such great demand by so many gospel artist.  There is a great message to this song and Spanky’s delivery only enhances that message.

That old fashion revival feeling returns with “Shackles.”  This is the longest track on the CD, seven minutes and three seconds.  The song is so descriptive in its depiction of one losing the many shackles of life, until you really will be able to relate to the words to the song.  This song will minister to you.  This song is ideal for a concept video.

The final track on the CD is a combination of “O How I Love Jesus and Further Along.”  Included in this track are verses from other well known songs that have been a part of the rich experience of the people that appreciate gospel music, including Amazing Grace.  The track is only four minutes and ten seconds long.  Another three (3) minutes would have not been disappointing.

After listening to the entire CD, we think you will agree that the Bishop and the guys 'Got' it just  'Right.'  On the whole Darrell McFadden & The Disciples' "I've Got A Right" is a power packed 10 song traditional gospel quartet celebration.  The project is available everywhere so, if you have not purchased this project, head out to your local record store or click HERE to purchase the CD.  We give Darrell McFadden & The Disciples' "I've Got A Right" a 9.5 out of 10.  Click on the title to hear “I Believe.”
