Al Hollis, of Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC'S, is born.

 

Rev. Ruben Willingham & The Swanee Quintet's biggest hit song was "Sit Down Servant" (1953).  Their first guitarist, William Crawford, is said to have brought the electric guitar to gospel music.  R&B superstar James Brown credits the Swanee Quintet as being a major influence on his music.

 

Brook Benton is known for his R&B recordings, but he actually started singing with The Camden Jubilee Singers, Camden, SC.  He also sang with The Langfordaires, The Golden Gate Quartet, and the Jerusalem Stars.
