The Windy City Spiritualaires

"Live" In Bama

For this the month of March we take a look at probably the most well known young group on the road today. That group is none other than the Windy City Spiritualaires of Chicago Illinios. The group was formed in 1995 and since that time they have become one of the nation's hottest young traditional quartet's on the road. This new release comes on the heals of their 1998 release "Change In My Life". This newest CD/Video recording "Live In Bamma" showcases the Spiritualires hard driving style in at the American Gospel Quartet Convention in Birmingham Alabama. With a host of guest appearances and a wide variety of songs "Live In Bama" is destined for success.

With two pastors as their lead singers it is evident from the outset that these young men know what their singing about. The group has taken a well-known quartet equation and laid it before the listener in a smooth manner. As many quartet fans know you must have one lead who can drive a song for minutes on end. However you also must have a lead who can sing those smooth 10 minute ballads. In Pastor Anthony Spencer and Pastor Jonathan Tucker the Spiritualires have lead singers that can do both. This concept is illustrated to perfection on their most popular drive song "Change In My Life". This song is nothing short of a down home shout session highlighted by Tucker and Spencer vocally dueling it out.

Songs of note on this project are numerous so here are just a few that really stand out. First of all it must be mentioned that this project is jam packed with guest appearances. From Willie Clayton to Chequita Lumzy of the Lumzy Sisters, the Spiritualires pulled out all their friends for this recording. While it is a little overbearing at times it does make for a great variety of styles and sounds. The first selection of note is the hard driving selection "One More Day". This song features Elder Teddy Cross formerly of The Gospel Keynotes battling it out with Pastor Spencer on lead vocals. This drive song literally seems to jump out of the CD player with power and excitement. "Sit At His Feet & Be Blessed" is a beautiful ballad lead by Pastor Anthony Spencer .

His smooth yet demanding vocals are complimented perfectly with the sweeping background of the Spiritualaires. This song is a powerful witness for every Christian who is longing for that great reunion over in Glory. The breadwinner for this project takes up the last 2 tracks and over 17 minutes of the recording. This song features Pastor Johathan Tucker and probably the hardest female quartet lead in the industry, Chequita Lumzy of the Lumzy Sisters. The shear Anointing of her singing on "God Will Take Care Of You" reaches out and grabs the listener. On the whole The Windy City Spiritualaires "Live In Bamma" is a power packed quartet celebration with over 70 minutes of sermonizing and singing. The project is available everywhere so head out to your local record store in pick your copy up today. I give The Windy City Spiritualaires "Live In Bama" a 8.5 out of 10.
