The Gospel Stroll

The spotlight this month is on none other than Roscoe Robinson.  If you are familiar with the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi or the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, then Roscoe Robinson should be no stranger to you.  He has the unique distinction of having sung with both sets of blind boys.  He was with the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi for about twelve (12) years.  He was with the Five Blind Boys of Alabama for about 20 years.

Singing has always been a part of his life.  He was once a member for The Southern Sons.  And, while in the military he organized an award wining gospel quartet group.

He has recorded with both sets of Blind Boys.  He has traveled the world with both sets of Blind Boys.  Although, today he is not an active member of either group, he is still called upon by both groups to stand in or fill the gap when need.  He has performed on Broadway.  He has been inducted into the Legend Hall of Fame and The Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

With such an outstanding résumé it is not surprising that his new solo project would be extraordinary.  The project, Legendary Roscoe RobinsonThe Gospel Stroll,” will definitely satisfy the traditional quartet gospel music fan.  Mr. Robinson did not leave out those that like contemporary music.  There is even a track for the young fans.

The first song on the project is the upbeat title track “Gospel Stroll.”  When asked why this song is on the project, Mr. Robinson indicated that he “wanted something that he felt sure would appeal to the young people.”  Well, it would seem that he succeeded.  The song has a modern day hip-hop sound.  It may not get much airplay, but any young person in your household will probably find this to be “their’ song.

Another old song that is worthy of note, is “Heavy Load.”  This is not The Jackson Southernaires' or The Mighty Clouds of Joy's versions.  Mr. Robinson takes this traditional song and makes it his own.  The other traditional songs on this project that should be in airplay rotation across the country are “Sending Up My Timbers” and “Move Up A Littler Higher."

One of the hidden treasures on this project is Mr. Robinson’s signing Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.”  On the project it is title “Lean on Jesus.”  Make no mistake about it, this song is just as smooth as Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.”  Mr. Robinson has take this song and given us a message from the Word.  You will find yourself playing this song over and over.

On “I Am Pressing On,” Mr. Robinson is joined by the legendary Clarence Fountain.  These two giants in gospel music really give you four minutes and thirty-six seconds of soul stirring ministry.

On the whole this CD offers a little something for everybody.  Smooth harmony, slick production, and powerful messages in song are normally the ingredients for a great recording and they are all present in this release.

We give Legendary Roscoe RobinsonThe Gospel Stroll” a very deserving 8 out of 10.  You should be able to find this CD at your local record store.  If not, you may purchase a copy by calling (205) 786-2941.  Click on the title to hear the slow, very smooth and thought provoking “Lean On Jesus.”
