Kenny Davis & Melodyaires

Sing About Jesus

This month we spotlight the smooth melodic song of Kenny Davis & Melodyaires.  Their new project is titled “Sing About Jesus.”  They are truly singing the Word in song.  They maybe “Sing[ing] About Jesus,” but they are definitely trying to get a message about Jesus through to you.  This is a project that the more you play it the more you will appreciate it.

If you are familiar with the Melodyaires, the first thing you will notice about the project is that the name of the group has been modified.  In checking our prior recordings from this group we notice that they have move from being The Dynamic Melodyaires, to Kenny Davis Featuring The Dynamic Melodyaires, to Kenny Davis & Melodyaires.  The common word in each of the name is “melody.”  One of the definition of the word “melody” is A pleasing succession or arrangement of sounds.  This definition is very fitting for this project.  The ten (10) tracks on this project certainly represent a pleasing arrangement of songs.

The project begins with the title track, “Sing About Jesus.”  This is a great ballad with a clear message.  It would be very unfortunate for this song not to get significant airplay.  The message is just that powerful.

The next track, “All The Way.” is upbeat and is the closes song to what may be consider a drive song on the project.  This is followed by “Place Beyond The Sun.”  The harmony on this song is tight.  The next track is a very slow arrangement and some variation in the lyrics to the song “Roll Called Up Yonder.”  This is easily the second best song on the project.  Don’t be surprise if you find yourself playing this track over and over.

“I Found A Friend” is a mid-tempo track that probably could have been a little longer, with less instrumentation.  Just as the guys really begin to 'work' this song it ends.  Even though the background is a little weak on this track it is a good song.  This should not in anyway discourage you from adding this project to your collection.  The guys get back to harmonizing with a tight background on “Be In The Number.”  There is a very interesting arrangement to this song.

The next track, “Sad Condition” is very reflective of the condition of the world today.  The words to the song are so true.  This is one of the few gospel quartet songs today that actually address the plight of this world.  And of course, the message in the song is that “if we ever need the Lord we need Him now.”  This song is followed by “Live For Thee.”  After recognizing the “Sad Condition” of the world, The Melodyaires gives you the answer to addressing the problems of the world – “Live For Thee.”  Next is “Toiling,” a mid-tempo song, which is followed by “Set Me Free.”

At times the harmony on this project is very good.  The arrangements are certainly, in a good way, different than what you may have expected from the Melodyaires.  Overall it is a good project.  Admittedly, the more we play this project the more we like it.

We give Kenny Davis & Melodyaires a solid 8 out of 10.  To order this project visit their website at www.kennydandmelody.com  Click on the title to hear the smooth and thought reflecting “Sing About Jesus
