Keith Wonderboy Johnson & The Spiritual Voices

Send A Revival

As we reflect back on the year that was 2002 there was one particular group and song that made an indelible mark on the quartet industry.  Though they have been traveling for over 25 years the current version of voices is really just starting to become a major force in the quartet industry.  In the early days this particular group was  known throughout the New York area as Phillip Johnson & The Spiritual Voices.  As the saying goes, time brings about a change, and this group is a living testament to that very statement.  Now known as Keith Wonderboy Johnson & The Spiritual Voices, anyone who is familiar with quartet music has either heard of, our seen these young men in concert.  For all who have witnessed their ministry, you know that they are one of the most exciting well rounded groups on the road today.  For this the first actual review of 2003 we feel it only fitting to look at the hottest radio song of 2002 "Send A Revival". It also doesn't hurt that we stand only a month or so away from the release of The Spiritual Voices newest video entitled "Send A Revival" LIVE!!

With 13 selections, this release by the Spiritual Voices is probably the most representative of their actual style.  In other words not since the group's first nationally recognized CD "Through The Storm" in 1998 have we really been able to hear the real Spiritual Voices sound.  "Live & Alive" was really a more traditional project then their style has shown throughout the years and "Tribute To The Quartet Legends" was just what the title implies a tribute CD.  The Spiritual Voices recorded sound should really be characterized as traditional gospel with a contemporary flair.

In terms of songs, this project offers a little something for all types of music listeners.  For those looking for what Keith often calls "Foot Stompin' Service" go no further than the hand clappin' foot stompin' title cut "Send A Revival".  While many thought this song would not eclipse the popularity of "Be Right", they were wrong.  "Send A Revival" has become one of the most requested songs for the Spiritual Voices.  The song speaks of the fallen state of our current world and society.  In other words, the song speaks directly to the times in which we live.  For those looking for a soothing praise in worship like selection then you will definitely find it in Keith's testimony of thanksgiving "He Takes Us Through It All".  This song drips with gratefulness for God's ever abiding presence and mercy in our lives.

In terms of sound this recording is very tight both instrumentally and vocally. This CD falls in line with the Spiritual Voices tribute CD in that Keith's lead vocals are more aggressive than on their previous projects. While listening to the background harmony I do have to say that I miss the ever so clever vocal acrobatics of Spanky Williams who is now with Darrell McFadden & The Disciples. On the whole those who enjoy heavy instrumentation in their quartet preferences will defiantly enjoy this CD.  If you're not to keen on instrumentation then you might not take to the sound presented here.

If you've enjoyed the music ministry of Keith Wonderboy Johnson in the past then this project is yet another CD to add to your collection.  I give Keith Wonderboy Johnson & The Spiritual Voices a solid 8.5 out of 10.  This one is available everywhere so order it on-line or pick it  up at your local music store today.  Click on the title to hear "Sweet Spirit".
