One of the earliest successful gospel groups was the Mitchell Christian Singers of Kinston, North Carolina. They were formed in the early 1930s by James B. Long, who produced their earliest recordings. In 1938, the group performed in the Spirituals to Swing Concert with Benny Goodman, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the Golden Gate Quartet. ">
