Live In Michigan

This month we review Live In Michigan by Solid Rock.  The CD was released in 2007.  It is one of those CD that you might not pick up initially, but once you do, it is hard to put down.

As reflected in the name, this is a recording of a live concert.  The concert took place at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Saginaw, Michigan.

The group members are Rev. Govenor Pierson, Rev. Melvin Hamilton, Lamar Pierson and Robert Pierson.  The band for this recording consisted of Robert Pierson (Piano and Bass Guitar), James Owens (Bass Guitar), Marlow Dunn (Organ), Anthony Hill (Horns and Strings), Marshal Litfield (Drums), and Tyrus Miller (Click Track).

The concert opens with a lively “Introduction” by the emcee.  The group then move into "Thank U Lord," with Rev. Govenor Pierson singing lead.  This is a great song with the theme of giving thanks to our Lord and Savior. This is the song that will probably get the most airplay.

The next song is “Amazing Grace.”  There is a 20 second monologue by Rev. Pierson before they move into the up-tempo arrangement.  Rev. Hamilton and Rev. Pierson share lead duties on “Stand For Jesus.”  From the open chord the arrangement to this song is heavily influenced by Rhythm and Blues.  Those that remember the R&B groups of the 70s will immediately relate to the arrangement.

The project slows down with “A Mothers Love” and “A Mothers Love, Reprise."  Rev. Pierson handles lead duties exceptionally well.  However, it seems that he is at his best singing ballads.  Listen closely to “A Mothers Love” and we think you will agree.

Rev. Hamilton picks up the tempo with, what will probably be considered a drive song, “Sit Down.”  He begins the song with “let’s have church.” And, with this track they do.  Next is “Tell Somebody.”  Rev. Pierson reminds all that testifying to others about the goodness of God is what Christians should do.

“Working” is a ‘rework’ of the song “working on the building.”  The group’s up-tempo arrangement gives new life to this song.  It is followed by the ballad “You Didn't Do It” and "You Didn't Do It, Reprise."

Rev. Pierson invites those in intendance to come and go with me as he leads them in “Come On Jesus” and “Come One Jesus, Reprise."  Guest vocalists Marlow Dunn and Alden Payne join Rev. Pierson on “Time To Leave.”  The concert closes with “Prayer,” which is an Altar Call and Benediction lead by Pastor Willie Hill.  Minister Hill is the Pastor of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.

This is a great LIVE recording. The congregation can be heard interacting with the group throughout this hour long concert.  You get the impression that the group really enjoyed singing and that the congregation showed their appreciation by being an active part of the recording.

Overall, we think you will like this project by
Solid Rock.  We give Solid Rock's Live In Michigan 8.5 out of 10.  You should be able to find this CD in your local record store.  If you cannot find it locally, contact the group at (989) 213-7778.  Click on the title to hear "Stand For Jesus.
