In was sometime in 1957 that Harry Holt and Morris Pollard formed the group The Dynamic Dixie Travelers. This group has a very rich history in gospel music. They have consistently recorded some of the best traditional gospel music LPs and CDs. Mr. Holt was the last remaining original member of the group. He died on January 9, 2007. Since his death, the group has celebrated their 50th Anniversary and in 2008 released a new CD. The CD is aptly titled Jesus Will Make A Way Out Of No Way.
Before looking at the songs on the new CD, for those not familiar with The Dynamic Dixie Travelers, a little bit of there history may be in order. While on the Nashboro label they recorded Surly God's Able, Got To Be Some Rain and If You've Got A Problem. They were also on the T-Jaye Records, where they recorded So Much To Be Thankful For, The Lord Will Find A Way, Save A Seat For Me, God Will Provide, Peace In The World, Work Til The Day Is Done, I Thank Him, Jesus Will Never Leave You Alone, and The Best Of The Dynamic Dixie Travelers: Live In Concert. This Dynamic Dixie Travelers started as a traditional gospel quartet. They never veered from their roots.
They have incorporated fresh arrangements and more instrumentation into their most recent projects. However, none of it takes away from the group’s ability to deliver songs that minister to the listeners.
There is longevity among the group members. The longevity aides the group in delivering smooth background harmony. If you are fortunate to have any of their earlier recordings take a look at the lineup and you will see that many of the members are still with the group.
The current members are Vernon “Rookie” Holt (Lead Singer and Background), Levert “Vert” Allison (Lead Singer and Background), John “Jonathan” Holmes, Sr. (Lead Singer and Background), Edward “Chzbro” McClain (Guitar), Deshaun “Dee” Fisk (Bass Guitar and Background), Dejuan “D” Jones (Drum), Slayden “Cotton” Evans, Jr. (Guitar) and Tommy “Chester” Grimes. Notice how many lead singers there are in this group. That is one reason why this group has been referred to as a “powerhouse.” There is no way to single out any one of the lead singers. In a word they are all ‘great.’
The songs on the new CD are “Breakthrough” “Am I On the Roll This Year” “Thank You Lord” “Take Care of Me” “Live Right Die Right” “We Ought to Pray” “Father” “Have Faith” “Come to the Altar” “Another Chance” “Jesus Will Make a Way out of No Way” “Don't Hinder Me” and “Going Home.” If you like ballads, this CD is for you. If you are looking for a hard hitting drive song, this CD is for you. In the liner notes it is stated that “the attitude of the group is that [they] are ministers of God.” True to these words, this is a great traditional gospel quartet CD that will minister to you.
